**The Greatest Man I Never Knew**

Daniel sat in his apartment in the pitch black dark. He hadn't even bothered to turn any lights on. He couldn't face the light; or rather he didn't want to. All he could think about was his father and his 'son' and even if he didn't know for sure that Daniel was his son he knew he owed him, because if he was his son he knew how he felt.

Daniel knew what it was like to grow up with an 'absent' father, the pain it causes, the questions it leaves permanently unanswered, and the never-ending quest for approval you feel certain that no matter how hard you try you can never get. Daniel was all too familiar with each of these emotions and he had always promised himself that he would NEVER let his son feel any of them.

He leaned back on the couch and sighed. Glancing to his left he saw a small radio next to him and felt the unexplainable urge to turn it on. When he did a slow country song began to play, he had never really been a fan and was kind of tempted to turn it off, but his exhaustion got the best of him. And later on when he looked back he was glad he didn't. It was oddly just what he needed; it went a little something like this:

_The greatest man I never knew
Lived just down the hall
And everyday we said hello
But never touched at all
He was in his paper
I was in my room
How was I to know he thought I hung the moon_

The greatest man I never knew
Came home late every night
He never had too much to say
Too much was on his mind
I never really knew him
And now it seems so sad
Everything he gave to us took all he had

Then the days turned into years
And the memories to black and white
He grew cold like an old winter wind
Blowing across my life

The greatest words I never heard
I guess I'll never hear
The man I thought could never die
S'been dead almost a year
He was good at business
But there was business left to do
He never said he loved me
Guess he thought I knew
